Blue Jays acquiring starting pitcher Taijuan Walker from Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later.

To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Trent Thornton was transferred to the 45-day injured list, ending his season.

Walker has made five starts for the Mariners in 2020, registering a 4.00 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 innings. He owns a career 3.95 ERA split between the Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old possesses a fastball that averages 93 m.p.h. and also features a slider, curveball and splitter. He is due to enter free agency at the conclusion of the 2020 campaign.

Toronto had become desperate for help in its starting rotation after recent injuries to Nate Pearson, Matt Shoemaker and Thornton. Blue Jays starters have only pitched 119.2 innings this season, which ranks them 26th in baseball. The lack of length from the rotation has forced manager Charlie Montoyo to lean heavily on his top bullpen arms.

I've been critical of many of the current management group's deals (justifiably), but I really like this one. Walker has pitched well in 2020, is making just $2 million and is only 28. This deal could really pay off nicely both short and long-term BlueJays

Let's gooooo

'Player to be named later' has better stats than 'cash considerations', so it's a fair trade for Walker!

Does Seattle need an overweight out of shape first_tbasemen/DH

Love this deal. Lightens the load of the rotation.

Career era under 4 and an innings eater. Good move assuming the ptbnl isn’t anyone too valuable

What 2016 trades can and can't tell us about Blue Jays' deadline strategy - Sportsnet.caThe summer of 2016 is the only time this front office has been a mid-season buyer, so the trades the Toronto Blue Jays made at that time are instructive as we look ahead. To some extent, they offer a possible roadmap for 2020. bnicholsonsmith They shouldn't be buyers this year either. Why trade futures in a worthless year when you can get huge returns on vets since there will be a lot more buyers.
