Ohemaa Boateng shares her favourite spots for food and the outdoors in her Jane-Finch community and beyond.

There are two things our city is never short on: fascinating people and interesting experiences. In this series, the Star asks locals you know about their Toronto., is ready to welcome her community back to the city’s largest urban farm to access food, learn about agriculture or just enjoy the view.

Outdoor fun at BCCF comes with a serious mission. “There’s a huge need in the community,” says Boateng. One in three Black families experience food insecurity — hunger or having to choose between paying for things such as rent over food. Boateng was born in Tel Aviv and as a child came to Canada as a refugee, settling in this corner of the city. She’s never left. In 2014, Boateng, who trained in early childhood education, got hired at the farm to work with kids. “Prior to that I had no idea the farm even existed.”
