A lawsuit filed on behalf of a toddler whose arm was mauled by black bears after she reached through a fence at the Greater Vancouver Zoo alleges negligence led to the attack.

The notice of civil claim filed in British Columbia Supreme Court by the girl's guardian, Richard Hanson, says the attack in 2019 left her with a fractured wrist, and one of her fingers was partially amputated.

The lawsuit filed last month alleges the zoo and K-Bros Developments Corporation, which owns the property in Langley, B.C., owed a duty of care to the child, who was two years old at the time, given their control of the premises and the bears. It says the girl was visiting the zoo in August 2019, when she reached through an "unguarded chain link fence" at the black bear exhibit and a group of the animals "attacked and mauled" her arm.

It claims the defendants knew prior to the alleged attack that the bears had been "vicious" toward people, with a "propensity" to cause harm, and they failed to take adequate measures to ensure the toddler would be safe at the zoo. Neither the zoo nor the property owner has replied to the lawsuit and none of the allegations have been proven in court. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 4, 2023.

Totally guardians fault. Bear are wild and the toddler was let to wander into an area that was not for the public. Ridiculous.

Sueing the zoo ,,, really mabey you shouldn’t let you kid stick there arm in a inclosed area with bears

Risk when u go near dangerous animals....

Beary sad

Now that's bad parenting

Ur not using the term “ Mauling “ correctly. Click bait maybe?

This is giving Harambe vibes and it’s not okay. Not the animals fault.

Is the bear okay!!

Better shut down all zoos and anything else kids can get hurt doing with out parent supervision.

“When she REACHED INTO enclosure”. Frivolous lawsuit needs to be thrown out.

who the fuck lets a 2 yearold stick their hand in a bear cage sounds like child abuse to me

And maybe the parents or guardians should have been supervising

How did the bear escape the enclosure & protective fences so that it could get the toddler away from their responsible & loving parents to maul them?

Guardians are negligent in allowing their charge within reach of a visible apex predator.

Just as suspected. Zero parenting accountability

That toddler fucked around and then proceeded to find out

You keep wild animals you better make sure there is absolutely no way they can harm patrons. I hope they get every penny.

Clearly the guardians’ fault. They let the kid put their arm through the fence.

Father of girl whose arm was allegedly mauled by bears at Greater Vancouver Zoo files lawsuitA B.C. father whose daughter was allegedly injured in an attack by bears at the Greater Vancouver Zoo has filed a lawsuit seeking damages. Unfortunate accident for the little girl. What where the adults doing beyond the safety fence zone? Negligence it would seem. So - this so-called 'father' lets his two year old into an area the public isn't allowed to be in, and then isn't watching while she puts her arm in the cage... ... and then sues the zoo? Ballsy. The father should be charged with trespassing and endangerment - “We can confirm the incident occurred in an area that is not authorized for public access.”

Father of girl whose arm was allegedly mauled by bears at Greater Vancouver Zoo files lawsuitA B.C. father whose daughter was allegedly injured in an attack by bears at the Greater Vancouver Zoo has filed a lawsuit seeking damages. When do parents become accountable. This is insane. He’s suing the zoo because he allowed his 2 year old to stick her arm through a chain link fence where bears were? I am not a fan of this zoo (or any), but that’s crazy. A no common sense parent issue.
