B.C. Tourism: A so\u002Dso summer for some regions, a dire one for others

“While we have seen an uptick in a very few specific areas, and while some of the attractions, restaurants and hotels may be able to pay their bills for this month, when you take March through June and then what’s anticipated beyond September, the outlook is still very, very bleak.”

“A large part of the revenues are generated by the major centres before people fan out,” he said. When there are few visitors to Vancouver and Victoria, “that hurts everyone.” The B.C. Hotel Association released up-to-date occupancy figures this past week, numbers that underscore the grim situation. Provincewide, the figure is 32 per cent occupancy, though in those stronger areas mentioned by Judas — the Okanagan, Tofino, the Parksville-Courtenay corridor, Whistler — August occupancies are expected to hover around the 50 per cent mark.

The second issue is that the federal emergency benefits program has made it difficult for hotels to find workers as some people receiving those funds don’t want to re-enter the workforce. Tourism Vancouver’s Chwin said all sectors of the industry are involved in advocacy efforts with the B.C. government, noting that, “we’re living through the evidence of what happens when you shut down the tourism industry.”

Asked about that, the Ministry of Tourism responded: “Government is currently reviewing proposals for economic recovery and we look forward to sharing more on that in the weeks ahead.”Article content continued“I am very hopeful that we are going to roll up our sleeves and figure out what are we going to do this fall. September is a cliff in front of us.”It was tough enough for B.C.

The resort’s key Canadian markets outside B.C. are Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, Fisher said the hope is that they will be able to welcome Canadians this winter while following the advice of the health authorities that safety comes first. Perhaps the most intriguing idea on how to keep ski hills operating, and possibly with international visitors, is one floated by the B.C. Hotel Association’s CEO.
