As global health leaders consider whether recommending face masks for the general population could curb the spread of COVID-19, B.C.'s top doctor says she's been mulling over the same idea — with several caveats.

There is growing interest and adoption of face masks in Western countries as infection rates in some Asian countries with longtime mask use appear to be slow and with a “flatter curve” than the exponential growth in infections seen in Europe and the United States.

Henry and medical professionals around the world have prefaced all discussion about widespread use of masks with reiteration that medical-grade, N-95 masks must be reserved for health-care workers on front-lines who are constantly exposed to the virus.“If you are going to wear them, it can help reduce the droplets that you shed into the environment and if somebody is infected and has mild symptoms or early on in the illness it can prevent you from putting those droplets out,” said Henry.

As the international medical community considers whether to formally endorse masks, grassroots campaigns to promote their use seem to be driving the discussion.from a volunteer mask-maker in Toronto has been hugely popular in Canada, promoted by the #MGH1000masks campaign from Michael Garron Hospital, though the hospital is very clear that, “Hospital health-care providers will not use these masks. They have certified masks that they are required to wear.

Please check the measures taken by Dr. Wu Liande who defeated plague successfully one 110years ago within two months in China. He requested people there to wear mask . There is neither surgical nor N95 . Another famous French doctor opposed this died six days after he got there .

Mask will help. But you also have to still practice physical distance. In combination it will be successful. End the mask stigmatization.

Once enough time has passed it's likely more ppl are carrying the virus than don't or it becomes futile to track the sheer who are exposed, it makes sense for EVERYBODY to cover up rather than trying to guess who is which... That doesn't mean those negative are helped by it.

Thank you B.C. How are Canadians to trust what Dr. Tam says about face masks or about the the mapping process for covid19 if transparency is not part of that process?

Agree

Better late than never. Just need to educate good practice in donning a mask and get enough supply. W.H.O. discouraged people from wearing masks while applauding measures taken in China, which mandated everyone to wear masks.

They don’t have a clue if they’re coming or going.

I trust BC's top doctor more than the Liberal doctor Tam.

has them for sale.

COVID-19 emergency checkpoints strain long-standing free movement between provinces‘By limiting entry and exit, public health authorities believe they can further limit and prevent the spread of COVID-19’ Quebec has the most number of confirmed cases, but then they block the entry of people from Ontario. They should do the opposite : restrict the exit of Quebecs to other provinces, which can help reduce the spread of the virus. Time for the separation of the WEST. No more free movement between provinces but Canadian borders that are open caused no concerns?!?!?!
