The United Conservative government outlined its blueprint for more police in rural Alberta on Tuesday. Under the plan, 275 front-line police officers would be added to Alberta’s 42 smallest detachments.said as it stands, there is no minimum number of officers at RCMP detachments and a made-in-Alberta police force would provide better policing for all regions and improve response times.
“We can also make access to mental health, addictions, family crisis services, and other specialized police services more accessible to all communities across Alberta.”Shandro said the proposed model would have 65 to 85 community detachments that would have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 80 officers working in them.
The government is deciding next steps following the release of a third-party analysis last fall of the proposal for an Alberta-run provincial police force instead of using the RCMP in rural areas and some smaller cities. But it said there is potential for more cost-effective law enforcement by using existing human resources and the government’s financial services to save money, and by drafting agreements with municipal forces to share specialized police services, including canine units, air support and tactical squads.
There is nothing stopping them from doing that now, just add more RCMP officers to the contract.
Don’t believe anything Shandro says!
Instead of spending the massive $ it would take to duplicate what is already in place with the RCMPAlberta why not spend a small fraction of that to boost RCMP officer counts across the province? Probably because it's not really about better policing...
We as Albertans have never once asked for this. We have however asked you to stop toying with privatization of our Healthcare system and to pay its workers what they're worth....we've asked for a competent response to COVID. You delivered on neither
The municipal Police services can't even do their job right how do you think a provincial service would fix things. The problem is the media giving the UCP a stage.
Funny how NONE of the other provinces complain about the RCMP. I am a conservative, but have no faith, nor Trust with this current UPC government, just a bunch of used cars salesmen! Crooks...
BS, if the budget is not there already, can pretty much guarantee the salaries of the officers would be reduced big time and NO police pension. Otherwise, ask where the extra money is coming from Cutbacks with hospitals, hard to believe there is money for prov police force!
What you getting ready for. Don’t forget
WE DON'T WANT OR NEED A PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE CAN YOU HEAR US NOW
Remember this when you're waiting an hour for an ambulance in Airdrie !!
Sounds like Govt is getting ready to FORCE people to do something against their will! Hospital & Healthcare workers are needed way more than Gestapo!
What a great choice to have Ina Sidhu on the nightly news a 5PM. One of the best news readers on yyc stations. I'll remove others from the list of stations.
Somebody vote these clowns out before they can actually put this into practice.
