Two of the four Challenger jets currently used by the Canadian Forces for executive transport lack the equipment needed to comply with the new ADS-B system, which replaces radar-based air-traffic control with the transmission of GPS-based data. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has set Jan. 1, 2020, as the date aircraft will require ADS-B transmitters to operate legally in most airspace. Europe is implementing the system in June 2020.
"We are therefore looking at other mitigation options. Timelines and costs will be determined once options have been selected." "The executive fleet has been perennial issue where the country is penny-wise and pound-foolish," said David Perry, a defence procurement expert with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.
The defence department projects spending between and $20 million and $49 million to "consolidate" the Challenger fleet, a figure likely based on acquiring used aircraft. With only four Challengers, the squadron is operating close to capacity and losing two aircraft could threaten its ability to perform these missions, the sources said.
Two jets conform get rid of the rest . It would be cheaper to use a charter once in a while than replace the jets besides the government should be flying less to help the climate emergency.
Maybe Trudeau can find a used plane like he did with the fighter jets..... no need to buy new ! What good for the goose is good for the gander
Australia should have some used planes.
Buy 2 , the second one to carry Trudopes costumes .
We won’t upgrade to ADS-B because our POS prime minster wants to travel in style and is worried how HE looks to the leaders of the World ... he’d rather spend $60-million on a new plane rather than $100-grand on the ads-b upgrade!! what a tool-bag!
I think Best Buy has those. You just strap them to the rear view mirror and save a few hundred million!!!
Can we get one with a surf board on the side?
About time. Those jets are almost 40 years old.
This is BS everyone of the executive jets can be updated with ADS B and the data links required for the US and he doesn’t use these jets to go to Europe anyway. Much like buying a new car so u don’t have to fix the shocks
Buy decent jets for God’s sake
glen_mcgregor Glen, someone is feeding you nonsense. The addition of ADS-B is about $10,000 per aircraft. I know because this was added to my aircraft and most of the GA aircraft on the field in Windsor. Justifying a $49mil spend on this is a farce.
That equipment doesn’t cost that much to install. A few grand or less for most aircraft. Seems the govt is looking to justify some new cushy aircraft for justy.
meanwhile the people we put up front to defend Canada are flying 2nd hand F-18's
Upgrade to a canoe.
jetcitystar Guessing a deal on some Global's is possible?
