Young Australians are turning away from alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, consuming them less than their parents' generation in a trend that has public health experts baffled.

canvassed the habits of 22,274 people

Allegra Beaumont, 20, from St Kilda in Melbourne, said she had noticed a difference between her parents' drinking habits and those of her friends."My mum said to me 'your friends don't black out and throw up and pass out as much as we used to'," Ms Beaumont said. "Younger people today are more physically active, gym-going and health and wellbeing focused," Professor Farrell said.

The survey also found youth drove an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes, which rose from 8.8 per cent of Australians in 2016 to 11.3 in 2019. Just 1.2 per cent of 20-to-29-year-olds drank alcohol daily, the survey found, compared with 12.6 per for people aged over 70.

ditch ALL addiction.....and turn to the one source of happiness.

Elephant in the room, here. They are all getting their kicks from phones, apps, computer and online games etc. instead of drugs and alcohol. Same psychological highs. How could these researchers not acknowledge that very much? Effects could eventually be ghastly. Same with vaping

Vaping doesn't cause violence, and doesn't hurt anyone except the vapee. Alcohol and drugs cause many many issues, so why is vaping being banned in Jan 2021? Cash grab?

Clickbait headline. I don’t read the SMH for this very reason.

Vaping is a drug, so they didn't give drugs a miss at all.

yeah right...

Isn’t nicotine a drug? Legal, but still a drug. Vaping is the worst idea since planking!

*alcohol and other drugs. Wouldn't want you to believe you don't consume drugs yourselves.

Yes, well, great wisdom comes with youth.

Wait, the heading is young people giving drugs a miss. Then goes on to say that cocaine use is way up, as is the use of ecstacy, ketamine and cannabis with meth use remaining stable. So they aren't drugs then?

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for pornography, it’s the new drug and it’s devastating lives.

So ummmm..... what's vaping then?

Well, I guess that's an improvement
