Snow is falling, there’s a wind warning and Victoria is enduring its coldest day of the year. | MartaPascual3 winter

At the crack of dawn on Tuesday, as snow blanketed ski resorts and most Victorians were still snuggled under their covers, Anne Young got out of bed, pulled on her wetsuit and jumped into the frigid waters of Port Phillip Bay for a swim.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast snowfalls of 15 centimetres as low as 600 metres for Tuesday, which could mean snow in the Grampians, Dandenongs and Yarra Ranges. Up to half a metre of snow could also fall at Mount Hotham and Mount Buller. It comes after Hogan Island and Wilsons Promontory recorded gusts of 130km/h and 100km/h respectively in the 24 hours to 9am on Tuesday.

“The forecast is actually quite promising. They are calling for approximately 20 centimetres in the next 48 hours,” he said. “Early snow does correlate with bookings. People start to book their holidays, make their plans, and lock them in. So, that is always good news for all operators.”
