The most popular vehicle in Australia is no longer a sedan or wagon, hatchback or coupe | KonradMarshall

They call it “the dinosaur in the driveway”, while in the US they’re known as a pick-up truck: those big, burly, dual-cab, four-door utilities with a tub. You can’t miss them: tricked out with roof racks, spotlights and snorkels, nudge bars and bull bars, roll bars and tow bars. The next time you’re in traffic, check your blind spot. The most popular vehicle in Australia is no longer a sedan or wagon, hatchback or coupe.

With tax concessions for commercial vehicles, high-riding utes first invaded Australia en masse a decade ago through corporate-fleet purchasers. Spurred by marketing, buyers who would never previously have considered a ute stopped seeing them as rough runners and instead as a versatile vehicle. Whether you favour the Amarok or Navara, the allure is the same: a Monday-to-Friday family car doubling as a weekend wheelbarrow. Most are four-wheel-drive and can comfortably pull a caravan, and their safety ratings get better every year. They’re also growing ever more sleek and domesticated, almost gentrified.

“The dual-cab ute has gone completely berserk in the last five years,” says Trent Nikolic, managing editor of caradvice.com. And, he adds, much of the trend comes down to vanity. “Initially, the image of the person driving them was that of the tradie, the builder, the plumber. But you’re seeing more and more women behind the wheel, and more blokes taking them into the city in a suit. Australia sees itself as a big, broad, robust country, and that’s what these cars represent.
