Exclusive: New enrolments figures show year 5 has the second biggest intake of students transferring from other schools, behind year 7, and the year 5 intake has been growing over the past few years | niltiac

Year 5 is the new year 7 for many Sydney parents choosing private high school for their children.

The trend, which has been noted by principals and families at public schools, is driven by parents' fear of missing out on the high school of their choice or that their child might be behind when they start year 7. Parents Jade and Brett Stapleton were always planning to privately educate their sons for high school, but only decided to send them in year 5 when they toured Waverley College, a 5-12 independent Catholic school."They were very content and enjoying going to school every day, but I just felt that year 5 and 6 was going to be pleasant but probably not stimulating enough and they'd cruise through just doing what they've done in the past four years," Ms Stapleton said.

Meanwhile, a parent of a year 5 student at a public school in the Newtown area said she knew of about six children who left for other schools this year, roughly half for OC class and half for private schools. NSW Primary Principals Association president Phil Seymour said it was "frustrating" when this happened because the families were often happy at the local school.

Dodgy childcare crackdown sees licence approvals drop 98 per cent over single yearThe NSW Government confirms 211 operators had their licenses cancelled in last five years — for misconduct and fraud — and only three new approvals to operate were granted last year. Why they let private for-profit providers run childcare services is beyond me. Our kids go to a not-for-profit centre that is affiliated with a local public school and they are incredible. Yes, it’s the worst crackdown I’ve ever seen Always happens when run by public servents and politicians incompetent fools
