One of Western Australia's largest livestock traders say thousands of sheep stranded after the crew of an export ship contracted coronavirus will provide a boost to local meat processors.

The 56,000 sheep stranded after the crew of Al Kuwait contracted coronavirus will probably be processed for WA's supermarket and restaurants

Dean Hubbard, head of Elders' WA livestock and wool operation, which sells more than a third of the state's livestock, said the sheep would provide much-needed supply to WA's abattoirs. Livestock Pricing managing director, Rob Kelly, said WA's population was so small, the demand from supermarkets and butchers for these types of sheep was limited.

"If you want to move [boxed] meat out of the country, there's a lot less freight available and … it's very expensive." The heavier sheep should be able to go straight to processors, while the lighter animals will probably spend more time in a feedlot to get them up to required processor weights.

The sheep that are exported tend not to be lambs. They are slightly older, and not the preference of Australian consumers.

Sure hope so.

COVID-19 live export ship banned from sailing in the northern summerExporters who wanted to ship 56,000 sheep to the Middle East after their vessel was delayed in WA because of a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew, have been refused permission to leave after June 1 It’s a barbaric trade that should be stopped anyway. Don't know why they just don't kill and package them here under 100% Muslim control and owned for their religious reasons......less problems and could export more. What's happening to the sheep? Completely inhumane treatment of animals.

56k sheep aboard ship to be killed after live export refusalThe federal government has refused an exemption to its live export ban that would have allowed 56,000 sheep to be transported to the Middle East, and they will now be slaughtered in Western Australia. Seems like a waste I bet they bury the lot of them rather than putting them on the market. Sheep meats are high demand in PNG. Why export far? Guess New Zealand will always be the sheep meat supply to PNG .

Australia is now in a recession for the first time in 29 yearsThe March quarter national accounts show Australia's economy shrank 0.3 per cent at the start of the year, but was cushioned by exports and government spending. Training wheels Fraudenberg will at least go down in history for something. Shit. This mob couldn't organize a root in a brothel. Having suffered through the early 90s recession I am in no mood to suffer through another.
