Advocates for a First Nations man detained for 14 years in a 'hopeless and desperate situation' say they will renew his case for justice with the United Nations to move him to accommodation where he can live his life with 'dignity'.

Advocates for a First Nations man detained for 14 years in a "hopeless and desperate situation" say they will renew his case for justice with the United Nations to move him to accommodation where he can live his life with "dignity".

Winmartie's two guardians, Aunty Margret Campbell and Melbourne-based advocate Patrick McGee, both gave evidence to the royal commission's 11th public hearing examining the interactions of people with cognitive disability and the criminal justice system. "I have devoted my life to him, in what has been a very difficult life," Mr McGee told the royal commission.

The inquiry this week heard about the "terrible dynamic" of the Forensic Disability Unit in Alice Springs where Winmartie is the only person under care and remains "over-medicated and isolated." At a special hearing in 2009, a jury delivered a qualified verdict of guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and a custodial supervision order was imposed.Speaking in Pitjantjatjara at the royal commission this week, Aunty Margret said via an interpreter that Winmartie was given "shut up medicine" which left him "always sleepy and drowsy."Winmartie's guardian Aunty Margret Campbell with Winmartie last year during a visit to his country.
