Opinion: Why vaccine mandates must be a last resort | Holly Lawford-Smith

I spoke in recent days with two women who feel strongly that they do not want the COVID-19 vaccination. One works in construction, the other as a teacher. Both are likely to get vaccinated – under duress – because they cannot afford to lose their jobs. The JobSeeker payment wouldn’t cover their rent.

I have had the first jab of Pfizer and am waiting for the second. I am happy to follow the medical evidence, which tells us that the health risks from COVID vaccination are extremely low, and the social benefits high. The vast majority of Australians appear to agree. We are on track to vaccinate 80 per cent of the population aged 16 and over by year’s end,But there’s a huge difference between vaccinating the willing and coercing the unwilling into vaccinations by threatening their livelihoods.

Overriding this autonomy with coercive threats to livelihood would need to meet a very high bar for justification. Health experts remain uncertain about what percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated to provide herd immunity. Some think it is impossible.. On the WHO advice alone, mandatory vaccinations would seem premature.

sucking up to the extreme right

As a teacher, vax is mandatory. No worries ✅. But for the politicians it’s not. One in, all in. G Christiansen and C Kelly too!

Bc many don't want to live in an apartheid regime.

Just re-read that article because it is garbage from start to finish. Bringing feminist ideology into a health matter that is a community concern was the highest floating piece of garbage in a sea of garbage.

It’s just simple economics. You can’t have people unvaccinated in your building with Covid because it’s going to cost too much money to sort out their preventable mess.

Vaccines don't work. Anyone who studied at least high school level chemistry knows that

'Both of the women I spoke to had reasonable objections to vaccination.' Narrator: 'No they didn't.'

PRO CHOICE Not anti vax! Fact: This vax doesnt cure you! It doesn't stop you getting it OR passing it on. Questionable safety concerns both now & long term. 99.95% no 💉 live FORCING people to choose it or be ostracized from society? Like some medical apartheid? Un Australian🤬

Like seatbelts ,driver's licences !!

It -is- a last resort. These people were not convinced by the idea of saving their own lives, saving the lives of others, reducing stress on hospitals, they were not enticed by lotteries, free food, or free rides. So, sure, mandate it.

I thought this was a good balanced article? I am not for or against mandate. All I know is there will be kids in anti vaxx families whose parents could lose their jobs and they will pay a harsh penalty for their parents actions that they will carry for their whole life?

“Overriding this autonomy with coercive threats to livelihood would need to meet a very high bar for justification.” Millions of deaths globally due to COVID 19 does it for me.

The wheel of conscientious objection has turned an interesting circle, in the days of Vietnam it was about not wanting to hurt others, now it is about not hurting yourself and others suffering as a result The me generation obviously are not keen to take one for the team.

*opinion. Garbage opinion. Why do you print garbage opinions?

👮‍♀️Israel failed with 2 jabs! Started so called 3rd and 4th booster jabs. Africa is doing better as they are taking artemisinin. India and Japan started Ivermectin! Who is collecting money from the vax ? Vax is positive related with infection! Time to have alternate treatments!

A French defense contractor says Australia will receive a $66B bill for canceling its conventional submarine contract. Australian PM Morrison says he would have been “negligent” to go forward with it.

The Gestapo arrests a holocaust survivor outside a synagoge

From Europe. what the hell has happened to Aus? The images of Police violence to against your citizens suggests politicians & Police have turned you into a Police state Belarus/Russia/China. What are you doing? I despair. Just learn to live with covid and get vaccinated. That's it

No indication of what the 'last resort' stage would look like - surely we're there now.

Employers, airlines, hospitality industry entertainment venues, sports events all have the right to make vaccination a requirement !

Don’t mandate the clinical trial

Which foreign organisation is giving directives for mandates, passports, we codes etc?

because they initiate the MurdochRiots ?

'reasonable objections to vaccination, prominent among them that COVID-19 hadn’t been around long enough for longitudinal studies on the vaccines’ effects' - known via the Pub Test as 'having a wank'

Why don’t they get the injections it will save their lives if the gut he virus why don’t they listen to all the health people around the world you have to have the injections to save your life You have injections when you were babies against mumps measles chicken pox polio

Get the vaccine or stay at home - end of discussion

I scoured the article looking for a valid reason to object to a vaccine and came up empty handed. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Then I thought about why they were needed and the list was too long for a tweet.

Given so many people are using stupid excuses not to get it, mandates will be the only way to get community immunity up to a useful level.

What do you mean: 'how readily should we accept....?' We have accepted exactly that for decades. And it has served us well (yes, us, it's not about me, me, me, me, me....)

Why you shouldn't let your kid have 'just a taste' of your beerIt is a cause of angst for many parents — the worry that their children will face pressure to try alcohol and illicit drugs. But parents can make more of a difference than they think. Meanwhile, children of the '70s who grew up sips of KB, are doing just fine. Didn't bother reading the article but I can safely assume there's something about racism in there as well....

Why Australia’s new $100 billion subs could be uselessThe $100 billion bill faces inevitable, massive blowouts. The 20-year delivery date is optimistic, and likely too late. Now a top academic has dropped a bomb on Australia’s nuclear submarine dreams – labelling them dinosaurs of the deep. Technology goes both ways, location and stealth, if they create better finding tech, they almost certainly will develop better cloaking, the story is a beat up😎 Who says it will take 20 years? I think you'll find we have subs in service well before then. Leasing or buying existing subs for starters. You claim AI tech will advance so much subs will become “transparent”. Guess what, sub tech will also advance. What a badly written article.

Why can’t you borrow as much to invest in shares as property?Property investing seems like a bet that we, as a society, will prove unable, over the longer term, to match our housing supply to our housing needs, hence pushing up prices.
