Hitting the open road in search of adventure sounds undeniably romantic, but for many women living the solo van life, it's more about economic necessity than escapism.

"Certainly if you see someone broken down, if it's another solo female, we certainly look after each other."

The feature film Nomadland, released in Australia in February this year, centred on a woman in her 60s embarking on a journey through the American West in a van. Ms Kelly also advises women to start with smaller road trips over a few days or a week to build up their confidence.Rob Moore has lived in his bus for 10 years and says he's noticed an increase in the number of women travelling solo.

More fixed.

Hey come and live my life for awhile. I am staring down the barrel of homelessness, it is NOT by choice. Stop pandering to the LNP and actually start seeing how much damage they are doing.

Wow..lant ..less... Good car..

In the first year of Covid I did a lot of Vanlife by myself and it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. It’s cramped, unhygienic (you sh*t in a bucket and shower at public facilities), vans are always too hot or too cold and the Outback is a giant insect-ridden shithole.

Safety?

'Choosing'

Instead of trawling Instagram for staged pics you should have taken real photos of clapped out vans, strung up tarps and shabby tents. It's Hobson's choice.

I nearly had to do this a year ago because houses are unaffordable and the rental market in Tasmania locked up so tight 30+ people showed up to each inspection; I couldn’t compete. A family member rescued me in the end. Not everyone is so lucky. Few “choose” to forego a house.

Great political parties looking after their interests it's a modern thing 🙄

Fixed.

Who needs to shower anyway 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Is Pru Goward writing for you guys now too?

'I couldn't really afford to continue living in a house and pay bills and just live from week to week.' Christ almighty

Go see Nomadland, the grim reality is poverty, mental health issues, relationship breakdowns. Who chooses that

I dunno ABC news, have you seen how much buying a house costs?

These are not actually choices, these are acts of desperation and survival. 🤦

wake up ABC- it's not much of a choice when it's the van or homelessness while millions of properties sit empty across the nation

“Choosing”

This is NOT by choice! Please do not portray this as a fucking lifestyle. Imagine trying to live like this when you have a health issue, come on.

Choosing FFS. ABC makes economic inequality and women fleeing domestic violence sound like a lifestyle choice.😠😡 Journalism is Dead.

I really feel like this headline is misleadingly romanticised. I think something like: 'More women find themselves forced to live in vans due to housing crisis' would be a better headline.

Because a van is cheap temporary accommodation. It's not a house or a home. Did you not see the film NOMADLAND?

When I became some parent 35 years ago, the banks were biased against women like me. Eventually got my own p l ace many years later, but could have been much easier without that discrimination.

When the main story is about boomers road tripping and homelessness is a footnote. Good to see your priorities are straight. Keep up the good work. 😫

Be cashed up! Be a baby boomer! Rent out your house! Connect with others! FFS Btw we have 'chosen' someone who is working, whose partner is going OS to work so she has decided to live in a van. 'A nice opportunity '. Not for those forced out of their homes😡

'I was unable to continue working due to health issues,' she said. 'I couldn't really afford to continue living in a house and pay bills and just live from week to week.' Romantic.

'choosing'

Did Pru Goward write this one?

This sucks

They believe in a fantasy. There will be a bunch of cheap vans on the market soon.

I really can't believe ABC has written an article that glorifies homelessness and poverty in older women by saying it's a personal choice. It's not a choice. It's a shame on our nation. ThisIsNotJournalism

Choosing? For many it's the only choice

It's a great life to pursue...

coz they cant find a rich man lolz

An article romanticizing poverty

It’s a sensible choice that has lots of value on its own merit.

Hey ABCnews maybe look up the definition of choice - this ain't it: 'I am working and I can't afford to pay rent on my own and we've got the van,' she said.

Slow news day ? Or just pumping out clickbait and can't be bothered with news anymore ? ThisisNotJournalism fakenews

It reads like it's a big holiday adventure. 🙄

Without reading this, I'm guessing there's little choice involved

I knew that Frances McDormand was a fraud. Just knew it.

Because they can't afford houses

Beautifully made docu-style film by Frances Mcdormand 'Nomadland' looks at this - often can be family break ups, women become homeless, difficult to rent house...
