OPINION: The government must not get drawn into another battle of personal sledging. An electorate with bigger problems is over that kind of politics.

To invoke former prime minister Kevin Rudd’s rather uninspiring 2007 election night advice to triumphant Labor true believers – namely having “a strong cup of tea if you want, even an Iced VoVo [but] the celebration stops there” – a certain level of caution is required in the aftermath of Anthony Albanese’s victory some fifteen years later.

This is not to argue that Labor should shirk a fight, notably on the Coalition’s economic management record: a failure to produce meaningful pre- or interim-COVID reform or investment as it racked up a trillion dollars of debt, a point forcefully and consistently made by Treasurer Jim Chalmers for years. The ex-cop and political head kicker Dutton is not my cup of tea – taken weak or strong, clearly.

Whatever Dutton’s sins, writing off or indeed belittling one’s electoral opponent is fraught with danger, even if it garners likes on Twitter and makes one feel more righteous. Federally, Labor PMs such as Andrew Fisher were badly underestimated. How, his opponents reasoned, could a former coalminer be elected as the nation’s leader on two occasions, both landslides .

Dutton, leading a divided Coalition, may prove electorally unpalatable outside of Queensland, especially in Victoria, Australia’s so-called Massachusetts, governing at a state level for thirty of the last forty years, the Liberal’s former “jewel in the crown”.Nonetheless, clearly a large proportion of Australians are over brutal character attacks and political rancour. Seeing off Dutton demands Labor adopt a nuanced political approach to dealing with an admittedly hitherto un-nuanced Dutton.

This is hilarious. The Financial review was a complete echo chamber for the LNP and totally biased in your reporting of the dirty campaign and now you want gentleman politics. What a joke.

A rug! That is all he needs to trans to Mr Niceguy

Are you owned by Murdoch too? Albsnese made Pliberseck apologise.

So don't refer to Dutton as Skeletor, Mr Potato Head, Voldemort, Red Skull, or asshole?

Death stare of no account for Boofhead........

Voldemort is in charge. What could possibly go wrong.

Oh yes let’s have caution by all means. But I guarantee you won’t see the behaviour that the last PM exhibited on the floor of parliament when he turned his back on the opposition. Or when we heard the words ‘I move that the member be no longer heard’, too many times. Get a grip.

You mealy-mouthed blushers.

This mob are irrelevant now, in the last 9 years they have done sweet fck all, let's just stop giving them air time.

I'm trying to recall if any Murdoch Papers camped outside ScoMo's house after a big trip and snapped him in his ugg boots as he got the morning paper. Maybe the media arm of the conservatives could back off too,eh?

Agree, no personal sledging on looks, no abuse, but attitudes, beliefs, policies, behaviour-that’s what we use to decide what matters. That of course has not been the practice of many LNP MPs

A bit late to the party AFR…

Bargeass plibersuck

Agree. Plibersek, especially and the rest of labor should take a look in the mirror.

Senior Liberal MP says ‘there is a lot’ to hold Albanese to account forA former Liberal minister has taken a swipe at Labor’s “faceless men” making key Cabinet decisions as he declared the opposition was ready to hold Anthony Albanese to account. Because Morrison or Turnbull making all the decisions was such a great idea. It gave us the genius that is Stuart 'Mr Robodebt' Robert, for one. That old Chestnut.
