Key points:
Potential solutions include a workplace pay gap analysis, training and flexibility in managerial roles"I started working in aged care and that's when I found my passion." Ms Singh is one of the many nurses and carers who represent the industry with one of the most stubborn gender pay gaps in Australia.Australia's Gender Equality Scorecard is based on data from 40 per cent of the workforce, specifically private sector employers with more than 100 workers
An annual report card that looks at nearly half of Australia's workplaces has found across all industries that men are still taking home, on average, $25,000 more a year than women. But others question why those working on the front line — including nurses, social workers and even childcare workers — should be earning less than those in managerial positions.Women shouldn't have to stop caring to earn more: nurses
Nurses are generally not paid enuf for the amount they do. But the pay gap is bollocks as and the argument that you should put more men at the bottom and weman at the to undermines how is best for the job
I was thinking about reading this article, but then I decided I didn't care... That's three more minutes of my life to enjoy!
How’s this for gender equality?
Every single staff member from PCA to trained div one lied through their teeth to protect their wage at the suffering of the helpless . Had to move my relative to a round trip of 190 kl which means only gets few visits now . Evil workers !!! FACT . My opinion only
It’s a shame though so many aged care workers have few values & a passion for neglect . Harsh ? Not if in my shoes . Just spent 12 months regaining my health after battle in aged care with my relatives non care . Didn’t meet one staff member who cared .
Sounds like a self-interest story. The simple reality is that you signed up for a job that's value peaks and you are going to reach 'peak-carer'. Want to get paid more - then move on. Or should we rotate the rest of the employment system around your money ambitions?
I worked as an IT contractor, & got really good money, now I am the full time carer of 5 kids, seriously if you think looking after kids deserves anywhere near the same amount of money you are kidding yourself. As for nurses, they get paid across a huge range to match skills. 🙄
Obviously many care ‘customers’ don’t Have much money, so it would make sense that care worker roles are completely tax free. To incentivise and reward for a difficult job.
Encouraging women in STEM careers is great, but until we value 'women's work' we'll never achieve equality
It is supply and demand economics, there are more people who are qualified carers, if there was a shortage wages in these fields would be higher which in turn would attract others. Nothing at all to do with Gender Equality, just the laws of economics
Caring is unproductive to the bottom line, so they expect you to pretend to care while doing your chores. No time to listen to the feelings of others it requires an open system where all concerned are not under companies pressure for profits. Old people need time for everything.
