OPINION For Jennifer*, a 38-year-old single mother with a 13-year-old girl, her daughter’s eighth birthday was the occasion of high anxiety, not celebration.

How do you celebrate your child’s eighth birthday? There will be a party, perhaps. Some cake. Maybe a bike, or a Nintendo.

“It put us in a very tight situation and made it that much harder, after what felt like an arbitrary birthday,” Mary says. “I would have been in all kinds of strife if I had let an eight-year-old walk to and from school by herself, home to an empty house.” The increase in the poverty rate for unemployed single parents was startling - according to the report, it rose from 35 per cent of unemployed single parents in 2013 to 59 per cent in 2015.It was the Howard government that first started fiddling with welfare for sole parents. In 2006, as part of its “welfare to work” program, it announced single parents claiming the PPS after July 1, 2006, would lose it when their youngest turned eight.

“In total there are around 360,000 with children, Australia’s poorest, who are getting considerably less financial support,” the authors wrote. “The poorest families, and their children, will increasingly fall behind the rest of the population.”

This should be a nonissue. There is enough money to help but government is more interested in helping America to kill more coloured people. Oops. So too bad.

Also why is a person on Youth allowance aloud to earn nearly 3 times more a fortnight before their allowance gets cut than a person who by definition is unemployed and is obligated to find work?

Employer to parent. 'Ah so your kid is now 8? Well that means we can drop your pay by $88 PW.' Also how many people went from not being unemployed to being made unemployed by the GOV. Didn't they just increase the percentage of unemployed people when they introduced this?

Why former golden girl Jessica Alba disappeared from the spotlightShe was one of the biggest rising stars in the mid-2000s, but Jessica Alba’s star faded very fast. Here’s why. She’s and her company is worth over a billion dollars. That isn’t a “star faded very fast” to me at all. It was hard to take her seriously as an actress and not see her as a sex symbol, when she starred in a fantastic four movie in a skin tight outfit. Played a stripper in sin city movies. It is not surprising that she was concerned about being typecast as a sex symbol.
