Analysis: Why do some parents dread their child's eighth birthday? | jacquelinemaley

How do you celebrate your child’s eighth birthday? There will be a party, perhaps. Some cake. Maybe a bike, or a Nintendo.

“It put us in a very tight situation and made it that much harder, after what felt like an arbitrary birthday,” Mary says. “I would have been in all kinds of strife if I had let an eight-year-old walk to and from school by herself, home to an empty house.” The increase in the poverty rate for unemployed single parents was startling - according to the report, it rose from 35 per cent of unemployed single parents in 2013 to 59 per cent in 2015.It was the Howard government that first started fiddling with welfare for sole parents. In 2006, as part of its “welfare to work” program, it announced single parents claiming the PPS after July 1, 2006, would lose it when their youngest turned eight.

“In total there are around 360,000 with children, Australia’s poorest, who are getting considerably less financial support,” the authors wrote. “The poorest families, and their children, will increasingly fall behind the rest of the population.”

'There were no males at all': These industries are booming, so why aren't more men joining the ranks?Only 10 per cent of the aged care workforce is made up of men while the figures are even worse in early education, despite a need for gender balance in these areas — and societal views and pay play a big role. When I did my aged care course I was 1 male in a class of 17. Quotas are not needed but getting the right people is vital. I have asked many people I have worked with 'Why are you here because you don't have the heart to work in this industry' Must be climate change... Or fascism... Maybe white privilege? Because the wages suck!! Spare me!!

Why women will find it harder to get an abortion if the religious discrimination bill becomes lawWomen may need to shop around for a new doctor if the first one refuses to perform an abortion for religious reasons. Midland public hospital in WA is operated by SJOG. Even though it is a public hospital, they refuse to do abortions, vasectomies, pill implants etc. So much for being a public hospital. It's an aptly-named bill ... allows the religious to discriminate. You females that want abortion on demand should remember doctors take the Hippocratic Oath to preserve life. You may own your uterus but you don't own the conceptus.
