Why 83-year-old Everest trainer Les Bridge will never stop | Andrew Webster

The late mail about 83-year-old trainer Les Bridge was he’s not one for giving much away.

You only need to drop the name of grey sprinter Classique Legend, you only need to casually ask, “How’s the horse?” ahead of his defence of the $15 million The Everest on Saturday, and Bridge oozes enthusiasm like he’s the fresh-faced 22-year-old who gained his training licence in 1960.“Last year, he was like Conor McGregor,” jokes his son, Jason, referring to the lippy and supremely confident UFC star. “He was telling everyone the horse would win.

Sometimes they do. Bridge has sent a couple of horses to Hong Kong and they’ve succeeded. One was Southern Legend, who left Bridge’s stables in 2016 and won more than $12 million.Earlier this year, Ho called Bridge.Yet that was even more problematic, despite the owner’s deep pockets.“It was in the off-season, and he couldn’t get a flight back to Australia,” Bridge says. “Money wasn’t an issue, but Mr Ho couldn’t even charter a plane. The best they could do was get him back via New Zealand.

We talk about how he started 61 years ago when he snapped up the last block of empty stables on The Hill in the south-east corner of the Randwick track.“All the old trainers called it Poverty Hill,” Bridge recalls. “They said if you went there, you’d go broke. I was 22 when I went in there. They used to joke, ‘He won’t last long’. They said the boxes were too expensive and you couldn’t make a go of it. I’ve done alright. I started there as the youngest trainer at Randwick, now I’m the oldest.

Les Bridge, trainer of the winner Classique Legend, watches The Everest by himself from the mounting yard.As we watch a replay, and the sound of race caller Darren Flindell’s voice fills the room, Bridge recalls what was going through his mind.“I thought he was too far back,” Bridge says. “But I knew they were going too fast and that the leaders would stop. They were flying.”“This is where he won the race. That’s where he won it; when he got around them here.
