Lucy Betts was weeks away from her first birthday when she developed a temperature.
But when her mum got out of bed early the next morning to check on her, Lucy's eyes were closed and her cheeks were cold."She didn't cry and she didn't seem sick during the night," Ms Betts says. "When I put my hand in the cot she just felt so cold and when I picked her up I just knew. The last thing I remember is screaming out to my husband."
Royal Melbourne Hospital's director of respiratory medicine Associate Professor Lou Irving says young children are at a particularly high risk of developing serious flu complications along with the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases. "The other way is that the virus itself can sets up an immune response that overwhelms the person and this causes a form of acute lung injury," he says."It’s known young children benefit from being vaccinated," he says.
