The World Health Organisation ( WHO ) has shared an update on 'what is currently known' about the new COVID-19 variant of concern , Omicron , after it emerged in South Africa with 'several mutations'.

The World Health Organisation ( WHO ) has issued a summary “of what is currently known” about Omicron – including its transmissibility and the effectiveness of vaccines - two days after it was named a COVID-19 variant of concern .

The WHO also said “there is currently no information” to suggest symptoms of Omicron are different to other variants “but understanding the level of severity of the Omicron variant will take days to several weeks”.“All variants of COVID-19, including the Delta variant that is dominant worldwide, can cause severe disease or death, in particular for the most vulnerable people, and thus prevention is always key,” the health body said.

Omicron was designated a variant of concern on November 26 on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution. The decision was based on the variant having “several mutations”.   While information remains limited, preliminary evidence suggests there may be an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron when compared to other variants.
