Victoria's native wildlife protection laws will be reviewed after the deaths of more than 400 wedge-tailed eagles at a remote farm in East Gippsland. The time limit for an investigation into a landowner accused of ordering a subordinate to poison wedge-tailed eagles has expired
"The department and the Government have pursued every avenue legally to bring justice to the situation that occurred," Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said.DELWP investigators were limited in their ability to prosecute the case further due to the scope of the existing Wildlife Act.Ms D'Ambrosio said she was "appalled" by the case and that community expectations had changed since the Victorian Wildlife Act was drawn up in 1975.
"There is rock solid evidence and clearly complicity should be able to be prosecuted," Ms Redwood said. Lannate caused the eagles to die within 30 minutes of feeding on the sheep and lamb carcasses, the court heard.
Cmon, how about we do something about the eagles being kill by wind turbines. If you won’t adress that, then don’t bother making a big deal about them being poisoned. Hypocrisy.
OMG, two weeks imprisonment for the perpetrator, 100 hours community service for the landowner? These are manifestly inadequate sentences for this cruelty. If you can’t farm profitably without killing native animals, you really don’t deserve to farm at all.
Does johnauer qualify for a lethal injection also. I'd assume a relationship with the nature he has destroyed would be far more beneficial than a relationship with an ecoterrorist moron.
Bastard
Australia's record at protecting its wildlife is appalling. Just like its record for looking after its indigenous people.
I’m really glad they’re reviewing these manifestly inadequate environmental laws. The only trouble is that it’s taken this tragedy to bring it to a head.
Unfortunately a poorly educated ignorant individual(s)
Honesty. Wtf? Some people absolutely disgust me.
That penalty is a joke!
Unfortunately it Will be like many other animals. We will only see them in a museum. Very sad. Can not understand why we can not live with them in harmony. To many ass holes in the world.
This is not on. So wrong. 😡🤬😡🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yet these same birds are collateral damage in the green left's push for wind farms. potkettle
Only TheirABC could do a story on wedge-tail eagle deaths and not mention the words 'wind turbine' once.
What a despicably low act.
I've followed this story half heartedly and have yet to understand what insane reason spurred this killing. Do they predate on lambs or livestock? Nothing would justify poisoning wild animals like this, but I'm curious as to what inspired this act.
Wind turbines ?
Without animals, without pest, without wild life, we will be extinct
This guy has done one of the most sickest things I have ever seen-I think he has severe mental health problems
The drought sent all the eagles south. The eagles were decimating livestock numbers in Victoria and South Australia. The media won’t tell you how many animals that the eagles have killed.
Let's hope that they can introduce a retrospective clause into the updated legislation so that John Auer gets his just desserts.
OMG..a national icon slaughtered..madness
It is greed like this that resulted in the loss of the thylacine. We cannot continue to TAKE from nature without giving back.. even if it costs a few bucks. Sickening.
WHAT! Disgraceful
Add these to the list of massive bird killings
