Many people would regard 'preppers' as paranoid but there are health experts who quietly urge people to sensibly stock up on food over the next few weeks and supermarkets report a lift in sales of non-perishable goods.

Supermarkets were busier than usual late last week, while Woolworths revealed there had been a rush on non-perishable food and grocery items.

Belinda Hughes, a skincare specialist who lives in Melbourne’s CBD, said her cupboards were usually bare but the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak had changed her habits. While COVID-19 was unlikely to be severe in most otherwise-healthy people, he said it was not just another type of flu. "In an advanced country like Australia with good primary health care and good health system, I don't think people need to go and fill their cellar with tins," Professor Cowie said.

Pharmacist Irene Vonghack, of Botanical Pharmacy South Yarra, said the business had sold hundreds of masks and sanitisers and she had noticed people stocking up on vitamins and immune support medication.

Corona must give you the sh%$..that’s a lot of toilet paper

Yet ~500 million people globally have diabetes. 90% of cases are preventable. 1.5-2 million diabetic deaths annually. And these deaths are mostly preventable with healthy lifestyle. Why isn’t there the same hysteria?

I did notice some shelves for imported beer were nearly empty in one shop. The supermarket, not really any difference.

If you don't eat food grown or processed overseas then you should be OK. Look for Australian grown or Australian made and help our producers earn more as they keep us fed through any viral crisis.

LOL they should be stocking up on Panadol as that’s what they treated the cases in Aus with and they all survived

Amazon: AM I A JOKE?!!! ebay: With your same day delivery? Yeah!

We’re all going to die, at some point. Sorry to break it to you. 😷

I thought the world was going to end as a result of Y2K....it didn't... but this article will cause a panic... and make the situation far worse...

We stocked up, then panicked & ate all our rations - bugger...

I think I've got this thing beaten. I 've got a hallway full of supplies, and none of it is Corona. Coopers Ale, Peroni, Jetty Road Pale Ale. Yep, I'm all set. Bring it on!

More hysterical crap.

Fk wits be Richmond supporters for sure

🙄 Oh FFS, if only people were just as concerned about hygiene and playing it safe when people were dying from ALL THE OTHER FLUs.

There’s a big difference between preppers and being sensible about the approach to take. I would class these people as paranoid. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but hoarding as they are doing is just sad. And it’s symptomatic of what we have become in Australia over the past 6 years

Stupid if you don't

Meet the 'hopeful' Aboriginal Victorians working to take the treaty process forwardThe body tasked with taking Victoria's historic treaty negotiations forwards grapples with the complexities of the task ahead, as it aims to put key planks in place before the next state election in 2022. Indigenous people and Australian indigenous nations should be fully entitled and supported to reclaim ownership, influence, decision making and control of what is actually theirs. White Australia must recognise themselves as tenants, invaders, thieves, distorters of history. I will be actively campaigning against this racist movement. But first I will put my sunglasses on, I just saw a sea of white people in this article Another day, another indeginous article. You just don't get any better ABC...
