He’s back. One year after leaving the White House, Donald Trump has set the scene for a fiery midterm election year, holding a campaign rally in Arizona where he revved up his base, revived false claims about electoral fraud and hinted at another run for president in 2024.Credit:In a speech designed to reassert his dominance within the Republican Party, Trump attacked his critics and used the event to prop up loyalists and election deniers who are running for state and federal office this year.
The rally was the former president’s first campaign event for the year, coming days after the anniversary of the January 6 US Capitol attack. Appearing on stage shortly after 7pm, local time, he launched a 90-minute tirade against US president Joe Biden and the “radical left”, attacking his successor on everything from coronavirus and the economy, to immigration and the botched withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
The rally was a striking reminder of the sway Trump continues to hold in the party, and his trademark brand of reward-and-retribution politics. But while Trump remains highly popular among his base, some Republicans fear that some of the candidates he has endorsed may be unelectable by the broader public.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested, along with 34 out of the 100 seats in the Senate.
