We all helped frame Britney Spears and contributed to her downfall

. And it made me recall every rise and fall of celebrity I have documented in my long career in newspapers and magazines.

And yes, I felt sick, guilty and compromised. This was not what I entered journalism to do. This was not how I felt my measure as an editor should be gauged. This was not what I wanted media to be.However, there is another side to such shame and it is time the curtain was pulled to reveal that it is not just journalists, editors and publishers who are pulling the strings. Nope, there is a much larger force at play here, a force that is undeniable and ravenous.

Think about it. How many bought magazines with Diana on the cover? Yes, sweet or sanctioned photos of her with her kids were popular, but not nearly as much as the candid pictures of her in distress.

No we didn’t. Some of have managed to get thru life without really ever hearing anything much about her.

And this is why I stopped buying the gossip rags many years. I understood my part in it after Diana was killed but it still took me too long to stop reading them. Too many of of us have been complicit in collective bullying by proxy via supporting the media that peddles it.

Just cos there’s a market doesn’t mean you have to feed it.

But if it wasn't on the menu people wouldn't order it.....spin it all you like, the media has a lot to answer for.

So, based on that logic, drug dealers do nothing wrong.
