The states are being urged to build dams as new analysis shows water storage capacity is at risk of falling behind population growth.

The data suggests at current rates water storage per person in NSW, Queensland, and Victoria will fall by 30 per cent within a decade. Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud called on the states to take action.

"The states have been responsible for urban water since Federation and should be taking the lead," he said. "They're just not keeping up with their growing populations. "This is not just about agriculture, it's about water security and food prices in our towns and capital cities." Image: Getty

It's a no brainer. Bout time these idiots started listening to the people, or go the way of Malcolm Turnbull.

Decades of Labor Govts beholden to the Greens (no new dams) preference vote has robbed the States of much needed new dams ...instead we have redundant expensive desals ( feathering Unions pockets) that taxpayers are still paying for while that sit rusting 👎😡 auspol springst

time to crank up traveston dam again lol

So what are the idiots jackietrad AnnastaciaMP in power doing? Never occurred to them that infrastructure has to increase with population growth?, have they missed the drought that’s crippling the country? What are you doing ScottMorrisonMP

The federal government should be building dams and electricity infrastructure with the billions they'd rather give to the rich and big business in irresponsible tax cuts Australia cannot afford

The FEDERAL LNP COALITION GOVERNMENT has flooded Australia with well over a million migrants and refugees and hundreds of thousands of more foreign workers...and have done absolutely nothing regarding electricity and water infrastructure to cater for their big Australia policy

Control population growth then.

We apparently don’t need them in Victoria! Would upset Dan after giving us a wonderful desal plant & we must use it. Don’t worry about the millions of litres of water running into the ocean! He’s one astute man! NOT! 😡

Great idea. Dealing with climate outcomes the sensible way.

Not just at risk of falling behind population growth, it is already miles behind population growth. Australia gets plenty of rain but we are very poor at catching & storing it. This should be the main focus, not arguing the toss about climate change or whatever they call it.

We can grow more cotton too 😁

I worked for the State Rivers in Victoria 30 years ago and we tried to tell everyone then....message never got through

Dont worry the chinese are going to eventually invade Australia. Let the greenies nogiate with them!

You think? Do you really think at all? Of course your water infrastructure is going to get small if you increase the population. I would rather have had 10 new dams and 5 power stations that stupid broadband that is obsolete....🇦🇺🇦🇺

You’re kidding. Isn’t better to blame climate change and do nothing

Can't dam dry watercourses.

powerglobalus We the people knew this for a long time

It doesn’t take a genius to work this out. We’ve been asking for more water storage for years.

About time

Desal plants ? Why does no one mention this would be no droughts if they were used

JazzaBazza_ Build and build dam(n) it.

We are 20 years too late.

No bull...

But record high immigration is not a problem?

Haha how many years has this been begging for ? Oh wait the states have an idea - let’s put that out to private industry so they can charge a fortune for water use !!

We also need to stop immigration until the water and housing is sorting 🙄

Here's an idea ScottMorrisonMP be brave and slash population growth and you'll be very popular.

😂😂😂 let's talk about it for a few decades.... wait... Australia the backwater with no water and no ideas

Der

A guy on MMMNightShift last night was explaining about the need for trees in relation to evaporation & precipitation in a drought situation...hope they share what he emails them 👍

PORTABLEAIRSYD Australia politicians still using decade old promises way behind in promises well looking how technology skills moving fast in other countries but Politicians in same in 2029 YES go media recycle words

What a shock! Thank regressive greens warriors like RichardDiNatale and AdamBandt for this. We will be forever chasing our tail via idiotic immigration numbers in the name of “diversity” and growth, and refusal of people to realise our nations weather! It’s a dry continent.

CampbellNewman Oh really... darn... who would of guessed that the greens phobia about dams, and the general fear of protestors, would make weak willed politicians NOT build dams... how many good, large, dams, sited where they should be, have been built in Australia in last 20 years? Gumbies

Oi, the greenies will be furious about this, but hey, we could massively cut back on immigration numbers then we probably don't need much more storage capacity.

Take when last dam built in Melbourne and population then and now. Case closed. Oh and please, dams ahead of energy guzzling desal anytime!

so the federal government is shifting blame to the states about building dams but will continue bringing record levels of immigrants into the country. these people are f--ked in the head.

Morrison no policy on water. No policy on energy. No policy on climate. Gutless on China. Weak leader that blows in the wind.

Federal government should take control of dam building nationally.

Have they finally woken up ? Those greedy pollies et al have been part of the reason we have no more dams. Too interested in returns from their renewables investments. Forget the needs of farmers & the nation, just out to line their own pockets. Now look at the mess we're in.

Journalism 101. Who, what, when why. Who did the analysis? What does it actually say? When was the anaylsis done and when should recommendations be enacted. Why does the report make those recommendations?

Dams are useless unless its raining where they are built

The major parties will not act without a little push If they beleive building water infrastructure projects is the only way to get elected / re-elected then, and only then will they act

What about drilling for water? Bore water can be filtered and taste great, probably better than desalinated water. Other Countries have been supporting their water supply/usage this way for years?

Deeerrrrr!!!! We been attempting to build more dams for over 80-90 years! Government needs to move and move quick with the adjusted Bradfield Plan!!

Politicans should stop stuffing around and start looking after the population .. Tear the red tape up and move forward...

yep bring in an extra million+ people without building infrastructure to support it make good sense DOH!!

benny55au At a risk of falling behind population growth?! That happened some time ago.

successive “do nothing” govts we’re incapable of devising a plan or making anything happen. Idiot Abbott removed the only reasonably intelligent govt body with water responsibility and the Nationals only care about their big business backers.

Who would have thought

We aren't upset because we pay the Minister hundreds of thousands of $ to tell us what every Aussie already knows; we're upset because we pay hundreds of millions to state governments to cherry pick 'Green' excuses to ignore the bleedin' obvious need for more dams & irrigation

It's taken governments too long to smell the dust.

Climate scientists have been telling politicians for years and years that releasing carbon into the atmosphere will cause longer and harsher droughts. Building more dams isn't the answer, accepting advice to reduce carbon is but the LNP keep denying the science.

This has been acknowledged for some years. Bureaucracy needs to get cracking on this issue and stop procrastinating.

Let’s get on with it. Enough talk.

We'll see who works for Australians or the Chinese Government.
