A huge gum tree has fallen across a walking track in Melbourne's north-east, trapping at least one person and unleashing a swarm of bees on the victims | AnthColangelo

Credit:A man and a woman, both believed to be aged in their 70s, were walking along a track near Templestowe Bowling Club on Swilk Street in Templestowe, just before 8am.she heard the tree fall and then loud screaming.“We heard most of it from the café. We heard a tree fall, a big crackling and a bang,” Ms Katsakis said.At least one person was trapped when the tree came down after a night of heavy rain.“He went to go in and see if everyone was okay. There was two stuck under there.

"Their bodies were trapped under the tree. The woman looked worse than him, but to me she looked worse.Paramedics were called to the scene just after 8am, and left about 45 minutes later.More to come

I think local councils need to start assessing their old gum trees in their areas, particularly near walking paths and roads and cut them down or shed some branches. And I honestly don’t know why councils keep planting them in heavily built up areas.
