The West Australian Government's update to its criteria on who can leave and enter back into the state will see thousands of people eligible to return home to see family - but there's a catch.

Premier Mark McGowan announced an update to who could enter the state last week during a press conference, where he extended the border indefinitely, but details were only released on Wednesday afternoon.

West Australians will be allowed to visit family members in eastern states and return back into their state under new changes to travel exemptions. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Anyone entering WA from interstate - not overseas - to attend primary school, secondary school, university or TAFE The system for the new travel arrangements and exemptions are expected to go live on February 1 but will not come into effect until February 5.

Mr McGowan was adamant on extending the border, with a new date expected to be announced sometime next month, as it would be"reckless and irresponsible" to ease restrictions.
