Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced tough new penalties for people who fail to self-isolate when required, as the state records 439 new coronavirus cases and 11 further deaths, all of which are linked to aged care.
It comes after Australian Defence Force personnel and health officials conducted 3,000 doorknocks of people who were supposed to be self-isolating, and found more than 800 people were not at home. "If there were particularly selfish behaviour, like for instance going to work when you have the virus, then there is the alternative pathway and that is of course taking you to the Magistrates' Court where the maximum penalty that can be applied to you is $20,000."Mr Andrews said the team of doorknockers would be boosted by an additional 500 ADF personnel and 300 Department of Health and Human Services officers.
Police Minister Lisa Neville said Victoria Police would also have the power to detain people if they continued breaching self-isolation orders.
I am so sick of all these Special People who think they are so way above everyone else and can do as they please. Generally, they’re just thick morons who like to yap noisily about their ‘individual rights’ and then greedily accept Covid financial handouts. Obnoxious hypocrites.
In addition to hefty fines, I would also like to see breachers do community service in areas where the aftermath of covid tragedy is being experienced. They need to understand not only economic pain for offending against society but also to understand the reason for restrictions.
JailCovidiots
Maybe they should stop peoples jobseeker/keeper payments if they're found to be in breach of the covid restrictions instead. I bet that will stop a lot of them from going out.
Eventually the individual has to have a common responsibility for the society they live in. Unfortunately they have got used to having no accountability. Excuses, excuses
Victoria has built up a culture that does not respect authority. Unlike other states rarely are there consequences for your actions. The courts don’t impose custodial sentences for repeat offenders. Why should they listen to the government now.
Good.
So Dan there will not ever be any stage 5 restrictions, you will just keep adding new ones to stage four, you must think we are sooooooo stupid out here.
Too little too late
Seriously why were people who tested positive allowed to go outside for exercise? My son in NSW went for testing. He tested negative. But he was told to stay in his bedroom until he got the all clear, he certainly wasn’t allowed to leave the house
Good theyre holding the entire state back
Good, stop being so fucking self-centred. Some of us don't want to be in lockdown for the next 6 months
Typical women, give them an inch and they'll take a mile.
With an end result possibly ending in death, these idiots could possibly face a manslaughter charge
Will fines deter these deliberately antisocial people? I think not. Can't we lock them up until the pandemic eases, for public safety?
How will this encourage voluntary testing?
Oh well, just keep fining them.
800 Timebomb roaming around Melbourne.
Oh well, just keep coming them.
Not the answer. The answer and priority should be to stop people who are supposed to be isolating leaving their homes. DanielAndrewsMP is focusing on the wrong things. Stop the people spreading it who have it. springst andrew_lund
Who will pay the legal fees? I imagine a lot of these people will refuse or be unable to pay. How many appeals will have to be processed, at tax payers’ expense? All so we can double down on our authoritarianism.
Why is it almost always some woman slipping thru the border, refusing to wear a mask and buying up all the toilet paper? Not trying to start shit, I just don't get it.
2 fines and I’ve funded my pay rise
Good.
What's the fine for hiring bad security guards Gotcha It's a 40,000 pay increase
Dictatorship
