Victorian Labor MP Cesar Melhem tells the ABC a lesson is learnt after he is fined more than $20,000 for breaching the rules of the Australia Workers' Union during his five years heading its Victorian branch.

Victorian Upper House Labor MP Cesar Melhem has been fined more than $20,000 for breaching the rules of the Australian Workers' Union when he headed its Victorian branch from 2006 to 2013.The ruling centres on the union's dealings with five companies, including cleaning firm CleaneventMr Melhem told the ABC he had learnt a lesson and was"really pleased" the matter was over

Justice Debra Mortimer ruled Mr Melhem failed to discharge his duties as a union leader when the AWU accepted $488,007.50 from December 2010 to April 2013. In most instances, the staff were never made aware that they were members of the union, contrary to the AWU rules.The deals were done via side letters with the companies.

"All this conduct, in my opinion, was not inadvertent, or negligent, or careless; it was deliberate."
