There is a road out of this – a long, slow and at times bumpy one to be sure. But we are heading in the right direction, writes Sharon Lewin, Director of the Doherty Institute | OPINION

Victoria’s exit from lockdown demands striking a careful balance between increasing freedoms for the vaccinated and a very close watch over our health system. Guided by modelling from the Burnet Institute, even while maintaining current lockdown measures until the end of October, we have a few difficult months ahead.

Mandatory vaccination for multiple sectors is a core part of the Victorian Roadmap. In addition to aged care, construction and freight workforces, all healthcare workers will need to be vaccinated too, with a first dose needed by October 15.The Roadmap lists certain venues for opening – but only on the condition that all eligible attendees to the venue are vaccinated. I fully applaud the government’s leadership here.

Victorian roadmap unveiled as Geelong region re-enters lockdownHospitality venues and some retail businesses will be able to reopen outdoors once the state hits its 70 per cent full-vaccination target, under a roadmap unveiled by Premier Daniel Andrews. But Geelong and the Surf Coast will re-enter lockdown tonight in response to a growing outbreak. The big gatherings better be for fully vaxxed people only. The unvaxxed need to be made to stay in lockdown. Under Daniel Andrews' road map out of Covid-19, when people in Sydney are able to fly to Hawaii for a holiday, Melburnians will still be banned from travelling more than 25 km from home. ... the road is too long 😠😡 ENDLOCKDOWNNOW

Useless I’m fully vaccinated - no agenda here. That’s what herd immunity is!
