"Victorians use more than a billion of these bags each and every year; more than 10 million of these end up as litter in our environment," Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio told reporters.
Ms D'Ambrosio said a number of retailers had in fact already implemented alternatives for consumers.Bags used for fruit, vegetables and meat as well as thicker garbage bags will be exempt and customers will still be able to buy heavier plastic bags.

People had a whinge when it happened in WA but it's just become so normal to take your reusable bags I can barely remember the single use bags
You know plenty of those coles and woolies plastic bags end up in the yellow council recycle bins. Such a waste, and plastic bags aren't even supposed to be in these bins.
How can we improve on reducing the use of these bags so easily but struggle with renewables in larger formats like solar and shifting away from coal for example? Coal is like the biggest plastic shopping bag of all.

The government did that in SA a while back & it's worked really well for the supermarkets. Because now we pay for the bag & they get free advertising on the bag's. Citizens get screwed again.
I'm sure Aussies can find a way to have a meltdown over this.
