An Australian government boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing would put pressure on China over human rights abuses, activists say:

Human rights advocates in Australia have called on the Morrison Government to follow the United States's lead and boycott the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

“It is a grave travesty of the spirit of the Olympic charter, a blatant political provocation and a serious affront to the 1.4 billion Chinese people. If the US insists in wilfully clinging to its course, China will take resolute countermeasures.”The president of the Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women’s Association, Ramila Chanisheff, welcomed the US’s move, but said a lot more needs to be done to check the human rights crisis in China.

“I’m an Uyghur, living in the diaspora. And every Uyghur that lives in the diaspora, over a million of us, has close family members, relatives, friends that have been made to disappear in the forced labour camps, in the concentration camps or imprisoned arbitrarily for simply being an Uyghur,” Ms Chanisheff said.

“It shines a light on various human rights violations that have occurred in China, from the treatment of Uyghurs to more recently of tennis star Peng Shuai,” Professor Hsu told SBS news.Peng's mysterious disappearance in November, after the tennis player accused a senior former Chinese government official of sexual assault via social media, has come under global scrutiny.

The Olympics are a rare and powerful opportunity to pressure authorities in a country such as China to respect human rights, said Amnesty International Australia campaigner Nikita White.

An Australian government boycott of the winter Olympics would do nothing and prove nothing except that ourselves and the Americans are very selective when it comes to actions against injustice. Think China and Myanmar for instance.

It’s quite obvious China expected American vassal state to mimic its master. China doesn’t seem to care.

I thought the point of Olympics is to meet together as nations peacefully and to put aside politics.

You think so, they are not the gentlest race on earth and rhinos have thinner skin😎

Cool. Do our US overlords next, oh, and maybe boycott ourselves while we’re at it… 😂

The American death toll has reached 780,000 and the number is rising every day, but it is aggressively attacking China's zero tolerance policy. They don't care about human rights at all. They only hope that China will always be poor and backward.

In today's world, opposition to China seems to have become a fashion. No matter what vile, nasty, hypocritical, cruel, ignorant or vicious person, organization, party or country, as long as they oppose China, they seem to stand on a politically correct position. It's ridiculous!

Hahahaha for real, cash is king. Never going to happen.

Once a vassal... always a vassal
