'The online world should not be a Wild West where bots and bigots and trolls can harm people.' The federal government will introduce legislation to crack down on abuse and bullying on social media platforms.

The federal government is set to introduce new laws in parliament to combat anonymity of online trolls responsible for abusive and defamatory comments. The Morrison government has announced it will introduce legislation this week to crack down on abuse and bullying on social media platforms.

“The online world should not be a Wild West where bots and bigots and trolls and others are anonymously going around and can harm people and hurt people, harass them and bully them and sledge them,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Sunday.“That is not Australia. That is not what can happen in the real world, and there is no case for it to be able to be happening in the digital world.”

"We will back them in the courts and we will take them on. We will take them on in the parliament, and we will take them on in the courts because I want to ensure our kids are safe," Mr Morrison said. The social media platform will be required to notify the abusive or defaming identity of the complaint and must ask them to remove the online material.

Complete tripe. Just another attempt at silencing critics of Australia’s worst ever government because scottytheliar can’t handle the idea of peasants talking shit about him. The internet should be left alone by governments and corporations. True equality!

This is actually in huge favour to all the Labor gov & ppl who has been brutally attacked online. Based on the protests, a few thousand ppl to unmask and drag to court. They are all very active online especially on fb and Twitter.

LNP wants to unmask internet trolls, but not interested in unmasking backers and those funding blind trusts.

Yeh how about a federal ICAC

Anti scomo SBS readers are the worse

The definition is devised by the govt themselves and applied to anyone who exposes their narrative thread as propaganda. I am not a TROLL

Looking for test cases = silence people calling out lies leading up to the election ?

This is extremely poorly drafted and ill conceived. Rather than be contained to online content that offers real threat or organises real crime it criminalises 'comments that intentionally “menace, harass or offend’. All those terms, most of all 'offend' are extremely subjective.

Right

This shows their naivety around social media. Having worked on a site where people create accounts I can tell you that majority of trolls never verify email or number, that's why I use these settings. If I get a reply but no notification, the account isnt verified. There's 1000s.

Is this an indirect attack on Andrew Laming ?

Free speech against the politicians and govt is a no go?

We are being distracted from more important and actually achievable things by a govt expert at misdirection, wedging comm-unities, confecting culture wars.

Meanwhile parliamentary privilege, a proposed federal ICAC that deliberately excludes politicians, and a politically captured FOI process protects auspol from accountability. Provide a proper Federal ICAC, and then talk to us about Social Media.

Does that mean he can’t call samdastyari Shanghai Sam anymore? Not that he’s admit to it. What will happen to their social media strategy if they can’t bully and troll anymore? Or does it only apply to everybody else? auspol

How’s about unmasking anonymous political donors instead? Bots & trolls seems an odd thing for the fed gov’t to be focusing on.

Government corruption is being exposed on social media. They can't control the narrative as well as they, and their propaganda arm, NewsQorp, are used to. So it must be shut down.

LOCAL MAN FINDS INEXPENSIVE METHOD TO END CYBER BULLYING: Presses 'DELETE'.

Since trolling is a specialty of right wing LNP supporters, this may be a good thing.

And yet the right wing trolls are out in force . Hmm

What about protections for victims of domestic violence, stalking, and threats? It’s ok bc the offender is identified? No thanks. My ex is still stalking me 24 years later. If I was identified, he would find me and probably kill me. But it’s ok, coz he’s identifiable 😤🤬

Perhaps they could sort out the offline world first?

These Wild West bots & bigots are organised by the 'government'!!! WagTheDog

Morrison must honour promise for a federal ICACThe Herald's View: As the federal election draws ever closer, the federal government’s failure to establish a serious anti-corruption body is becoming a serious liability for the Coalition Only a FederalICAC with teeth will satisfy voters . auspol The current Federal Liberals & Nationals are shit scared of a real ICAC as it would considerably alter their ability to be able to do underhanded deals, to allocate tax payer funds to their electorates & provide grants & funding to their corporate & billionaire supporters. If not, one must ask, why not?
