Melbourne University vice-chancellor Duncan Maskell has warned staff that their right to academic freedom does not give them licence to write or say things that cause harm to transgender people.

for the suspension and review of a second-year philosophy subject on feminism over concerns it contains “transphobic rhetoric” in the course materials.

Professor Maskell raised the issue in an address to staff on Tuesday evening, acknowledging that there had been “deep disagreements and widely divergent views amongst our community about questions concerning gender identity”. “This is heightened, and perhaps made much more understandable, when you learn of the sometimes daily threat of physical violence that transgender people confront.”

Are you fucking joking? Tenure means nothing anymore? Universities as freethinking institutions is just a joke now. Nothing more than a Leftist sausage factory.

Why is Duncan and UniMelb allowing a religion to take such a hold within this educational institution?

Hmm, lots of bots liking this. What a disgrace Melbourne University is.

This VC is scared of zealot activists to the point where he mouths their nonsense. What danger does a feminist academic arguing for the protection of single sex spaces pose? You know who lives with the constant threat of male violence? Females do.

Terms such as “harm” & “safe” are tactics used to shame & silence people who disagree. It’s pathetic, that ideological bullying of this kind is indulged by bureaucrats - at the expense of free speech & reason *at a university* - too cowardly, cynical or cretinous to challenge it

The woke left is the Christian Right of our age.

Duncan Maskell has effectively warned staff they will not be allowed to challenge the following claims; - trans women are literally women - trans women must be allowed to compete in female sports; be housed in women's prisons & shelters; take grants reserved for women

And who defines what constitutes 'harm'? The corner of the left that tells us wearing a sombrero is a form of 'violence', that's who. idiocy

What constitutes harm?

The Melbourne University vice-chancellor Duncan Maskell has no clue what free speech means then. Or academic freedom. Nobody needs a licence to write, nor his permission, as he will likely find out in court should he continue this demagoguery.

Meanwhile Maskell allows an environment of *actual* violence and harassment to persist on his ever so diverse campus. When he says 'diverse' he means complete and total lockstep or you'll be vilified and ostracised.

But it gives the University the right to throw female academics under the bus. Just like in the UK this histrionic rubbish will be exposed for the breach of equality laws that it is. That academic institutions are doing this is egregious. Looking at you UniMelb

Good.

It’s not only transgender it’s any individual that your academic and executive staff work with.

How is Holly ‘causing harm’ to the trans community

Educated bone head

Of course the right to academic freedom gives them license to do that. Otherwise its not freedom. He would have imprisoned Galileo and fired Darwin, among many many others. Ideas must be beaten by better ideas not pompous overpaid under-achieving university VCs.

There are some LGBT academics at that university who are the biggest bullies of them all and nothing happens to them when they say or do harmful things to other people, treat people however they want to and keep getting away with it hypocrisy

Good. Now do girls and women.

This dude only puts on a dress on weekends

What happens when well meaning discussions are silenced by well meaning enforcers?

They are causing extreme harm to women and lesbians/gays. WHAT ABOUT US I will NOT pander to them and I WILL speak the truth.

If this “harm/safe” language is the tactic trans activists will use to shut down voices of women, lesbians & gay men objecting to subordination of material sex to psychological identity maybe two can play at that game. We are harmed by these claims & made to feel unsafe by them.

Damage done to women's & lesbian's language, culture, sovereignty, rights & protections by people insisting that they should be included-to our exclusion- is doing immeasurable harm. Transgender culture is unique - why not celebrate & cultivate it without transgression of others?

Limp wristed individual…..

Handing bureaucratic administrators the power to curtail academic freedom seems like a pretty bad idea.

More free speech in China

Duterte says 'we will not cooperate' with International Criminal Court probe into Philippine drug war killingsPhilippine President Rodrigo Duterte says he will not cooperate with an investigation of the Southeast Asian nation's drug war killings proposed by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor. Fair enough as these bastards forget about all the victims being robbed killed by addicts to get money for drugs and dealers destroying people and families by selling it. Critics dont care if kids get into drugs but he does care Good. As a Filipino hearing these reports about inhumane executions rather than express confidence in the Philippine Justice System, I just find this president appalling on so many levels. He is an enabler of extrajudicial killings and those have repercussions—mostly bad.

Remaining members of Biloela Tamil family arrive in Perth ahead of community detention 'placement'The father and eldest daughter from a Tamil asylum seeker family from Biloela have touched down in Perth, where they are set to begin living in community detention following almost two years of detention on Christmas Island. They are human beings. Why can't we quietly find a loophole here. You can still be tough with border control. It's a pandemic, it's a different time right now. Health and safety first. Let them settle here. Give them a protection visa. Around 300m grindingly poor people in South Asia are desperate for a better life, but can't afford a ticket to Mumbai, let alone a boat fee to Australia/Europe. Your country was 'founded in evil,' and your top stretch is bigger than India, tropical, and empty. Do the math, please The war has been over for 10 years. Sri Lanka has a free healthcare and education and progressing welfare system. The UN needs to get off its arse and do more than render 'damming reports' on human rights breaches by military occupation and this family would be safe back at home.

Biloela Tamil family released into community detention but government says it's 'not a pathway to a visa'Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has announced the Murugappan family will reside in Perth through a community detention placement, but says the decision 'does not create a pathway to a visa'. The sneaky way in. They really should be on a pathway to a visa though, and the obvious one to use in the government’s position is ministerial discretion due to unique circumstances. Saves some face and doesn’t change the policy, much less admit that there’s anything wrong with it.
