Major sporting codes want to sell broadcast rights for as much as possible. A law giving free-to-air networks a first look at key sporting events is in the way.

Australia’s top sporting codes have blasted a law keeping major sporting events on free-to-air television as “unfairly anti-competitive”, “unreasonable” and “inappropriate”, calling for AFL, NRL and Australian Open games to be cut from the list of protected events.

The sporting codes don’t need a law to ensure major games like the AFL Grand Final are aired on free TV, COMPPS says. But the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports – which represents the AFL, NRL, Cricket Australia, Football Australia, Netball Australia, Rugby Australia and Tennis Australia – says the law is outdated, should be abolished, and is stopping the codes getting as much money for their broadcast rights as they could., which is due to expire in April, and COMPPS has called for it to cover only truly iconic events.

Unfair, they are doing pretty well as it is and they cry it is unfair. Lol I’m sure the government will lend a sympathetic ear. Not

There are plenty of interventions govt make in a market to ensure fairness and equity of access. Providing free to air tv access for major sporting events is a reasonable policy most Australians support.

Australia’s housing market is ‘misaligned’ and at risk of a major crashSenior economist at REA Group Paul Ryan says with a 300-point increase in interest rates over 2022, the current price levels are unaffordable to consumers. “On the other side of the coin, you have really strong rent price growth. So it is not like renting is a much cheaper option for prospective home searchers,” Mr Ryan told Sky News Australia.
