With one quarter of people aged over 65 living with complete tooth loss and more than 65 per cent of them reporting difficulty eating, the Australian Dental Association NSW says oral care needs to become a priority | rachelclun

With one quarter of people aged over 65 living with complete tooth loss and more than 65 per cent of them reporting difficulty eating, the Australian Dental Association NSW says oral care needs to become a priority.

ADA NSW president Dr Kathleen Matthews said the report found insufficient attention to dental health leads to dental pain and malnutrition within residential aged care facilities. While the number of people retaining their teeth is improving, tooth decay and gum disease are on the rise and they remain the most common chronic diseases.

However, Dr Matthews said studies have shown if oral hygiene is improved and workers in aged care facilities are supported by health experts, the rates of aspiration pneumonia drop. Associate Professor Wallace is behind the residential aged care preventative oral health program Senior Smiles, which put dental hygienists into aged care facilities in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney. She said the success of the program has resulted in 10 facilities continuing the program by paying for the hygienist themselves.

Australians' trust in government reaches new all-time low, study showsThe Australian National University's election study has revealed trust in government has reached a record low. Did we really need a study to establish that? An overhaul of both major political parties needed. The path to become an MP should not be from student politician to staffer to MP. We need talented, real people interested in compromise for the good of the country. I wonder why *dripping with sarcasm*

Aged care facilities are becoming more like hospitals but the services aren't keeping up, doctors sayThe royal commission into aged care will this week focus on health care, including how older patients can suffer due to inadequate GP visits and a lack of access to mental health services. Personal experience my mother is now at rest. St Lukes Village Dapto would rate as a trusted loving enviroment. However even they are close to breaking because of the big $$$. You only get out of it what you put in and most are stripped bare to maximise profit margin. Why is this a news item? Why are we not surprised that profit oriented systems will take short cuts that even include abuse and ill treatment of helpless people whose needs cannot be streamlined into a profitable process. It's not Rocket Science.
