When 19 greater gliders were found in 2018, environmentalists thought their patch of forest would be protected. They are baffled by what has happened since, and fear the area will soon be logged.

"[It's] kind of like a koala in a way," she says.

Even before the catastrophic 2019 bushfires, Professor Wintle says greater glider numbers were in steep decline.Professor Brendan Wintle researches threatened species and their conservation at Melbourne University. Chris Schuringa is part of an East Gippsland environmental group which has been campaigning for forest protection for decades. It was in March that seven citizen scientists headed out at night in forest outside of Bendoc near the NSW border.

Environmentalists search for threatened species in the Cottonwood Range, outside of Bendoc, in East Gippsland on a dark night. In this case, enough greater gliders were detected for approximately 100 hectares to be set aside as a special protection zone."We kind of thought case closed, they are protecting this area," she says.

"Once applied that amendment would exclude timber harvesting from identified habitat within the coupes," the department wrote. How the coupes ended up on a logging schedule on DELWP's website, while it did not intend some areas to be available for logging, remains unclear. It says the three coupes are not scheduled for logging this year, with the online schedule "indicative only" and used to help DELWP with the "prioritisation of surveys".

VictorianLabor I assume you take pride in in what makes this country different and dynamic, what brings in tourism. The flora/fauna are a huge part, yet you prioritise the destruction of landscape, habitats. Find/invest in innovative alternatives to re-use/cycle/purpose.

Where are the Greens? MIA as usual, too busy with trendy campaigns such as asylum seekers, carbon trading & solar panels to give a stuff about bread & butter environmental issues such as the continued destruction of our unique flora & fauna. 👎

Everyone needs to realize the damage that is occurring to the TREES - the 'LUNGS of the Earth' and to the Environment generally, the Fauna, and the Flora.

Evil, pure evil.

VicForests being shown yet again to be careless at least. If they can do such a shoddy job on the reforesting of coupes, and can so easily befuddle or modify what seemed like a clear departmental decision to protect a habitat, then the govt should be investigating them.

VicForests are environmental vandals and need to be put back in line. They behave as a law unto themselves. DanielAndrewsMP auspol

This will need to be watched closely because this is an organisation that has repeatedly broken the law. They log what they want and deal with the consequences after. One area where DanielAndrewsMP has been a failure. He needs to stand up and protect irreplaceable wildlife.

VicForests still vandalising endangered species habitat.

It has to be regarded as a crime against humanity , simple
