Sydneysiders have been urged not to worry about thick blankets of smoke that covered much of the city's eastern coastline this afternoon as fire crews carry out hazard reduction burns before summer.
Two operations — one north and one south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge — were conducted today in an effort to reduce the amount of fuel on the ground in high-risk fire areas. One burn was conducted at Congwong Beach in the La Perouse area, sending clouds of smoke drifting across Botany Bay and over Caringbah.
The other was in bushland near Balgowlah. Smoke haze spread over the harbour bridge and obscured Neutral Bay from the air.At one point, only the tallest buildings in Sydney's CBD could be seen above the smoke haze.Sydney's bushfire season officially starts on October 1, with the Rural Fire Service conducting controlled burns where possible.
The air quality inside your mask is much worse lol
