But Stephen Rue, the highly-regarded NBN chief financial officer, was ultimately presented to cabinet as the candidate for approval and formally took the role in September.

Mr Rue is now considered by telecommunications sources as among the most likely senior NBN employees to retain his job if Labor wins the federal election, with board members and executives linked to the Liberal Party expected to be cleared out. But there is speculation some directors' jobs are at risk if Labor wins the next election, these include Mr Switkowski and Justin Milne because they are considered close to the Liberal government. Mr Milne is also a long-term friend of Mr Turnbull.Shadow communications minister Michelle Rowland, who is taking informal advice from the NBN's former boss Mike Quigley, criticised Mr Switkowski earlier this year in a joint statement with shadow finance minister Jim Chalmers.

Voters knew this by the 2016 election. This is hardly a revelation. A leader doesn’t determine the party. Turnbull 1.0 showed us that. Turnbull 2.0 confirmed you can only do deals with the factions for a while before the wheels fall off. Yes this is sad - had great hopes for Turnbull. Corralled then pulled down by the right
