At lunchtime on Thursday last week the weather forecast for Sydney’s inner west predicted a 40 per cent chance of up to 1.4 mm rain. Outside at the time, the heavens opened with a downpour so powerful it was hard to see your hand in front of your face.
“If it’s a 50 per cent chance of rain, you’re not going to bring in half the washing. With a 50 per cent chance of showers, it means half the time there won’t be rain and half the time there will be.” “The peak of storm season is around October to December ... as we go into deeper parts of summer, generally in a La Nina year, we step away from thunderstorms and start talking about low-pressure systems which typically bring flooding rains,” Mr Browne said.
“The Bureau of Meteorology advised we were potentially looking at a similar season to last year’s, if not a more intense one,” NSW SES commissioner Carlene York said.
