Trump's worst nightmare: Kamala Harris is a repudiation of his era

The political resurrection of Kamala Harris has been nothing short of remarkable. It is just nine months since her presidential bid fizzed, two months before the first primary, when she failed to raise funds or support, especially from African Americans.

“We’re going to inherit a nation in crisis, a nation divided, and a world in disarray,” Biden said in his email announcing Harris’s selection. “We won’t have a minute to waste.”The Biden/Harris team offers itself as the winning combination able to restore and rebuild, to heal the deep national wounds. Key also is that, for the first time on a Democratic ticket since 1984, neither of them has an Ivy League degree.

Already, after just one day, Harris was laying blows on him. It is the Trump administration, she said on Wednesday, “that is the reason an American dies of COVID-19 every 80 seconds”. It is extraordinary to realise that no one has systematically pummelled Trump in this way. The Congressional Democrats’ attacks are desultory and often not focused specifically on the President. That is now going to change, and Trump is not going to like it.

It is significant that Kamala Harris is described in official Democratic Party literature as “Black and Asian American”. No longer is it questioned whether she is “black enough” because her father’s African ancestry did not include the experience of slavery. Harris was included on the list of suitable candidates proposed by the African-American women and men who lobbied Biden to appoint a woman of colour.
