Donald Trump has made ByteDance an offer some are likening to extortion - either it sells its popular TikTok app to an American company or it will be banned from operating in the US | Stephen Bartholomeusz

The White House has made Chinese social media company, Bytedance, an offer it can’t refuse. Either it sells its popular TikTok app to a US company or it will be banned from operating in the US.

"I did say that, if you buy it, a very substantial portion of that price is going to have to come into the Treasury of the United States, because we’re making it possible for this deal to happen," he said."The United States should be reimbursed or paid because without the United States they don’t have anything. It’s a little bit like the landlord-tenant. Without a lease the tenant has nothing. So they pay what’s called key money or they pay something.

It might appear odd the operations of a popular social media platform have national security implications. With over 100 million US users the platform, the first Chinese app to really break through to mainstream America, is increasingly being used by young American social activists, most famously when they pranked Trump’s campaign event in Tulsa in June and claimed to have contributed to the embarrassing sea of empty seats. The app has also been used by the Black Lives Matter movement to communicate during protests.

It isn't the first time he's engaged in extortion. He keeps getting away with it

China should sell the US a down graded version for a Billion.

Plus, the US gets a cut of the forced sale. An offer you can’t refuse ...

Its a CHINESE SPY app...get rid of it

he also flagged a portion of the proceeds for treasury. sounds a lot like SenWarren merger and acquisition tax.

If TicTok is as has been reported then as far as I am concerned the President must do what it takes to protect his citizens from using compromising software. Christ! He would be canned if he did nothing and it turns out to be loaded with back doors for hackers.

Tim tok helps American people know what is happening in other parts of the world, including America itself, such as BLM. That is why Trump fears it.

Australia should do the same! Communist China has 100% of its company. TimWilsonMP

Just like a mob boss🙄

Should be banned here too

extortion when there is no law to pay him or US gov Disinformation extortion using tariffs lies Very mean nasty guy

That's what the Communists and Socialists do. It called nationalisation. Some people may say this is more like corruption.

It’s only fair. American social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, whatsapp aren’t allowed to operate in China. It’s reciprocal business, not extortion.

Seems good to me, then an american company owns it.

and the land of the free...

Donald Trump sets September deadline for TikTok sale, approves Microsoft's planUS President Donald Trump says that popular Chinese-owned video app TikTok would be 'out of business' in the United States if it did not sell its US operations by 15 September, preferably to an American buyer.
