As tensions continue to rise in the South China Sea, the USA needs Australia for one key thing.

Tensions have been boiling over between US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping Picture: Brendan Smialowski and Fred Dufour/AFP.Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd recently shared his concerns about the ongoing friction.

Amid the backdrop of rising military tensions across much of the Indo-Pacific, including the hotly contested South China Sea, arguably one of the most important trade arrangements under threat is the export of Chinese rare-earth minerals to the United States and other nations currently facing off with Beijing. They are a key element in the manufacturing of all manner of products and devices we take for granted in our daily lives, from the hard drive in your home computer to your smartphone.

For the United States, China’s near monopoly on certain rare earth minerals is extremely concerning. Approximately 80 per cent of all US rare earth mineral requirements are met by supplies from China, despite the United States possessing the second largest rare earth production capacity in the world.Source:SuppliedBeijing has not pulled any punches in ramming home how much leverage it derives from its rare earth mineral exports to the United States.

In November last year, Canberra and Washington took a major step to making Australia a key part of the US strategy to reduce its reliance on Chinese exports. But as tensions continue to rise between China and the United States over trade, COVID-19 and the South China Sea, the ongoing co-operation between Washington and Canberra to develop an Australian alternative to Beijing’s dominance of the production of rare earths is taking on a new level of importance.

Woe unto the australians. They are being balcklisted

Very strange that Brasil is missing from the article. There is a rumour that it has the second largest rare earth deposits outside of China. More homework required.

The only thing america wants from AUS is a launching pad and a target for them to shoot at

to use them as pawns .... US dont give a stuff about OZ do there dirty work ..... stop following the US

I'll vote against anyone who takes aggressive military action against China. It's our corrupt politicians who sent our jobs there and now want to send them to India. They can fight their wars themselves.

Biden, Trump 'bashing each other' with 'duelling narratives' on China | Sky News AustraliaNew polling results released in the United States last week indicated the relationship with China was a top concern for voters heading into the November presidential election with preference given to Joe Biden’s approach to the economic superpower. \n\nUS Studies Centre Senior Fellow Charles Edel told Sky News more than half of Americans adopted “hardening attitudes” toward China and more than 60 per cent believed the US should take steps in response to China’s handling of the coronavirus and foreign trade. \n\n“China has become the major and probably only foreign policy issue that seems to be captivating the candidates as they both try to bash each other as being weak on China,” he said. \n\n“The angle that you’re seeing is that Trump can lay credit to presiding over the largest shift in US-China policy in the last four decades.” \n\nMr Edel said Mr Biden however was pushing the narrative that the President “vacillated pretty wildly on China”. \n\nHe said while the “duelling narratives” were both true, new statistics showed more Americans were in favour of Mr Biden’s “competitive” approach to a relationship with China, rather Mr Trump’s combative stance. \n\n“Trump has really presided over the largest shift in American policy but it's whether or not people think that that shift has been favourable to the US and its allies and it seems that by all metrics that we’re seeing the answer seems to be no to this point,” Mr Edel said. \n\n“Being more competitive, more useful investments both at home and abroad from a technological perspective, working with allies is the narrative Biden will put out about he plans to compete effectively against China.” \n\n\n JoeBiden Lol... fake polls. Biden is owned by china. Got 1 billion for Hunter Biden! Pay for play!!! JoeBiden Not sure how accurate that info is, when most people are I’ve seen commenting and other polls show people are fed up with China and agree with POTUS policies relating to China. Very strange 🤨 JoeBiden

Trump 'hopeful' for coronavirus vaccine by end of year | Sky News AustraliaPresident Donald Trump says he is 'hopeful' that a coronavirus vaccine may be ready by the end of the year, which top infectious disease specialist Dr Anthony Fauci has dismissed as unlikely. \n\nFormer US Naval Intelligence Officer John Jordan told Sky News both Dr Fauci and President Trump made claims over the course of the pandemic which turned out to be wrong. \n\n“So neither man has a particularly great track record in terms of predicting the course of the coronavirus and events surrounding its mitigation,” he said. \n\nMr Jordan said the United States did have a number of vaccines currently undergoing clinical trials, “and some of them, even by Dr Fauci’s admission, may be ready for approval by October”. \n\nHe said there would be no 'lag between final approval and distribution' of a vaccine, should one be approved, due to President Trump’s Operation Warpspeed which saw the US government subsidise manufacturing costs of companies producing millions of doses concurrently with the trial process. \n\n\n\n realDonaldTrump It won't be long before Trumpy says the vaccine is dependent on his reelection TrumpIsALaughingStock realDonaldTrump Trump is desperate for anything to boost his election chances. realDonaldTrump Trump is also hopeful the pandemic will just 'go away.'

Trump wants children to return to school 'without real safety considerations' | Sky News AustraliaCypress College Professor of Political Science Peter Mathews says US President Donald Trump has been spreading “complete misinformation, if not disinformation” about the affect of coronavirus on children. \n\nTwitter hid a tweet from the President this week after he claimed children were “almost immune” to the virus. \n\n“That’s complete misinformation, disinformation because children are very much affected by COVID-19,” Professor Mathews said. \n\n“It’s very dangerous because he wants kids to go back to school without real safety considerations.” \n\nProfessor Mathews said the situation across the US was “horrendous” with more than five million infections and 160,000 deaths. \n\nThe Cypress College Professor said the worsening situation was “due to a lack of early intervention as well as a lack of mass testing, contact tracing and quarantining”. \n\n“President Trump is not taking it very seriously unfortunately,” he said. \n\nImage: Getty Epetermathews realDonaldTrump If you're under 25yo you are 50 times more likely to drown than die of Covid Epetermathews realDonaldTrump Hydroxychloroquine Should Be Available Over The Counter Epetermathews realDonaldTrump There hasn't been a single case of transmission between a teacher and student ANYWHERE on the planet.
