Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has defended Treasury’s costing error, which saw the JobKeeper scheme initially forecasted $60 billion higher than was required, saying Australia was plunged into a crisis and responded to early economic forecasts. The treasurer has ruled out extending the JobKeeper eligibility after it was revealed the scheme will cover about 3.5 million workers instead of a projected 6.5 million workers.

“We’ve had much more success than we initially thought and that’s a good news story for Australia and it is also good news for the budget and for the bottom line because it means our borrowings will be $60 billion less than they otherwise would have been,” he said. The treasurer said he remained in support of the Treasury and its forecasts as the nation was placed in a unique position and responded to the forecasts at the time.

$60 billion Treasury error sparks spending debate | Sky News AustraliaDebate is raging over what the government should do with the $60 billion dollar windfall from the JobKeeper bungle. \n\nA significant reporting error led Treasury to dramatically revise its projections for the Morrison government's JobKeeper program. \n\nThe scheme, which sees the government pay $1,500 fortnightly in affected workers' wages, was originally expected to cover around 6.5 million employees at a cost of $130 billion. \n\nThe Treasury and Australian Tax Office were forced to admit those projections were wrong and the revised estimate of the cost of the JobKeeper program is now just $70 billion which is $60 billion less than the original forecast.\n\nUnions want the payments extended to more workers, while the government says the error will mean the burden of debt can be reduced. \n\nLabor and unions are placing pressure on the Coalition to use the money to extend the JobKeeper program to individuals previously excluded from payments such as casuals who had been in the job for less than 12 months and temporary visa holders.\n\nThere has also been a push to use the money to permanently increase the dole. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia It’s not a windfall. Only idiots want to spend it. what windfall? it's borrowed. just don't borrow it now caymans..

Return of local sport in Australia after coronavirus hiatus a sign of normal life returning, PM Morrison saysPrime Minister Scott Morrison says the resumption of community sport is a sign that 'normal life' is returning to Australia after the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. And let's hope people stop being really nasty to one another now that things are returning to normal. We haven‘t got a vaccine yet. There is no cure. The more experts find out about the long term impact of covid, the more they are concerned. It’s not the flu. It can kill you and cause permanent damage. Scott is a dangerous moron. He will ‘trump’ us with this false dawn. Terrific, that’s a great insight thanks ScottMorrisonMP Now how about just shutting up for say 6 months, at least until we have a vaccine. Save you lying all the time! auspol notmypm
