Australians have been warned they face the risk of arbitrary detention in China after the Department of Foreign Affairs upgraded its travel advice to the mainland.

The government advised Australians not to travel to China due to foreigners having been detained in Beijing for "endangering national security". There is already a "Do Not Travel" warning in place due to the coronavirus crisis.

Tensions flared between Beijing and Canberra following Prime Minister Scott Morrison's call for a global inquiry into China's handling of the pandemic. Authorities said "if you are in China, and wish to return to Australia, we recommend you do so as soon as possible by commercial means". Image: AP
