Pfizer and BioNTech have announced a plan to study a coronavirus vaccine specifically targeted at the highly infectious Omicron variant.

Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research Development at Pfizer, Dr Kathrin Jansen, said it was important to provide people around the world with extra protection in fighting the pandemic.

Pfizer and BioNTech said it will meet the four billion doses target in 2022 even if they needed to manufacture a new vaccine. "We may not need it… but I think it's prudent to at least prepare for the possibility that this may be a persistent variant that we may have to face — even if it's at a very low level," he told MSNBC on Monday .
