The Matildas need only a point against China to finish in top spot of their qualification group after thrashing Thailand 6-0 on Monday night | dombossi

Tokyo 2020 has become one step closer for the Matildas, who sealed their progression to the knock-out stages of Olympic qualification by beating Thailand 6-0 on Monday night.

Emily van Egmond scored her first international hat-trick in Australia's six-goal romp against Thailand. The Matildas bettered their goal differential with the Campbelltown Stadium rout that put them ahead of China, who trail the hosts by two goals in their group. Monday night's dominant win was led by hat-trick hero Emily van Egmond who took home the match ball. Kyah Simon netted a brace and substitute Hayley Raso added the other.

The few times they went direct in attack, they looked dangerous. Fullback Ellie Carpenter's distribution from deep caused havoc for Thailand's defence and only wasteful finishing from others prevented her crosses from turning into the net. She picked out van Egmond in the 18th minute but the midfielder mistimed her volley before striker Caitlin Foord wasted a good chance from close range minutes later.

Needing to boost their goal difference, the Matildas unsurprisingly threw numbers forward in search of a third and nearly had it moments after the restart. Foord's close-range shot beat the goalkeeper but was deflected wide by a covering defender.

Meet the tower watchers — the first line of defence against bushfireWhile satellites with high-powered cameras and thermal devices are making life easier to see fires from space, the quickest way to detect fires is a lot closer to Earth. The fire towers around where I grew up had nothing as fancy as these ones do today. A map, a chair if you were lucky, and a siren. BYO binoculars. Oh, and a lock on the trap door so don't climb up before you check you have the key. EdanCockerell I used to do this as an employee for a contractor for HQP. Sitting in a 30m wooden tower on days when there's 50km/hr + winds is not fun 😂

How much did Elon pay yer, Fitz? cashforcomment ABCmediawatch Peter_Fitz Hope you didn’t spill your kale latte while making engine noises. Peter_Fitz Yes, it is a beautiful sporty beast when we test drove one but crazy they don't supply a tyre repair kit for price. My modest Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid has one. PHEVs are good for range anxiety, but all electric in city. Should be more popular in Oz with our bad charge network
