To be honest, I haven’t always been sold on the whole “men” thing.
Being a boy seemed to constantly involve running. Not for me, thank you; I’d much rather have a sit-down and a roll-up. And then there’s family. It’s perhaps only now, as I enter my 30s, that I appreciate how lucky I am to have my dad in my life. In many ways, we’re pretty different people: Dad likes cricket, whereas I don’t believe in cricket. But I like to think those superficial differences dissolve into nothing in the great big washing machine of love between father and son .
I’d quite like all these brilliant men to be around for as long as humanly possible. Over the past few years I’ve had men in my life wrestle with prostate cancer, depression and Parkinson’s disease. I’ve struggled with some mental health issues myself and sought out professional help. If I didn’t have the means or the emotional support to do so, it’s not hard for me to imagine things taking a darker turn, as they do for so many others.This is why I believe so strongly in the Movember cause.
